You lost me, love… what is QR Code?
QR is short for Quick Response, meaning they can be read or scanned quickly by a mobile phone. Here are three examples on how they look like:

Like many other cool inventions and gadgets, the Japanese created this one. QR Code’s main use is to store a piece of information and transfer it to your mobile phone. Once the information is in your mobile phone, it gives you details about that person or company. They are more useful than a standard barcode because they can store much more data including website URL link, text, vCard, geo coordinates, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace Ids, event details, product details, etc. Another advantage of a QR Code is that you don’t need a big hand-held scanner to read them because many mobile phones can scan and store the information.
Why do I need one?
Because a QR Code can store various different information, you can interact with your potential clients a lot more. Here are a few good examples on how you can use a QR Code:
- BUSINESS CARD
You can put a QR Code containing your information such as name, address, email and phone number on your business card and when your potential clients scan it, your information will be transferred and saved on their mobile phone in the vCard format. All that was done in a second and your potential clients don’t need to waste their time typing the information manually into their address book. - PRINTED MEDIA
A good example would be a magazine which has a recipe section. Reader can scan the QR Code for a particular recipe and all the ingredients list and how-to would be instantly transferred and stored in their mobile phones. No more searching for pen and paper to scribble down the shopping list! - STREET ADVERTISING
If you’re a store, you can put a QR Code on your street flyers and when your potential clients scan it they will get your exact location on Google map and a discount code which can be redeemed at your store. A great way to get people into your store! - PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
You can print your QR Code on t-shirts, mugs, notepads and practically everything and when people scan it they will be redirected to your website on their mobile phones. This enables them to bookmark your website easily without having to manually type in the URL. - VECHICLE ADVERTISING
You know sometimes you’re sitting in a traffic and the car in front of you has a sticker advertising a service you need. You frantically try to find a pen and paper or launch a notepad on your phone to try writing down the phone number and website but alas, the traffic light turns green and you have to drive! If that car has a QR Code on its advertisement sticker, all you need to do is scan it and all the information will be transferred to your mobile phone instantly. - EVENTS ADVERTISEMENT
A QR Code put on your event advertisement can store information on venue, date and time of your event which people can store in their mobile phones.
How does a mobile phone read or scan the code?
iPhone, Android and Blackberry phones can install a QR Code reader and most of them can be downloaded for free. Once installed, it works like a mobile phone camera. You just launch the application, take picture of the QR Code and you’ll get the information on your mobile straight away. Easy!
